A diagnosis of cancer and the consequenses of treatment can lead to significant psychological distress for both the patients themselves and those around them. Psychology services are offered to people who have been diagnosed with cancer, their partners, carers and relatives who are experiencing distress related to the illness. The psychologist also works closely with members of the Oncology multi-disciplinary team to offer holistic patient care.
Referrals will be accepted from any professional member of staff involved with the person's care. However, it is preferable that the referral has been discussed with the named consultant wherever possible. Referrals from GP's are welcome.
The referral MUST be agreed with the person involved first.
Referral forms are available on Ward 15, Outpatienst West and from the Psychology Department.
A referral is appropriate where there are indications of significant psychological distress which:
- does not resolve over time
- interferes with general life activities or treatment
- cannot be dealt with by member(s) of the team
Difficulties might include:
- Adjustment difficulties
- Difficulties coping with treatment
- Bereavement, loss or grief issues
- Body image changes
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety, fear, panic or phobias
- Anger, aggression
- Sleep problems

Out-patient referrals will be sent an appointment as soon as possible, usually within 4 weeks. We aim to see in-patients within 2 days.
