Self-Propelling Wheelchairs
- All referrals to the service for self-propelling chairs are assessed in clinic or the client's own environment by the wheelchair therapist.
- Self-propelling chairs supplied for hospital discharge should be assessed by the referring therapist on the ward.
- Where an existing client with an attendant pushed chair requests a change of model to a self-propelling chair, the client will need to be assessed by the wheelchair service.
- Clients who have medical contraindications to them self-propelling will only be issued with a self-propelling wheelchair following receipt of written agreement from their relevant medical practitioner.
- A self-propelling model of chair may be issued where the client does not self propel but the carer prefers larger wheels, subject to availability.
