Special Seating

Wheelchair
  • Referrals will be accepted for clients registered with a Bradford GP who have seating or postural problems.
  • The user should be eligible for a wheelchair for mobility purposes through the Wheelchair Services, and this should be the primary reason for referral (i.e. not to replace appropriate static seating, nor to provide school seating or a transport system).
  • Clients will be considered for special seating, if assessment from a wheelchair therapist or rehabilitation engineer identifies that they cannot be seated adequately in a conventional wheelchair.
  • For example:
    • When the clients' physical condition may deteriorate if not positioned correctly, and when the seating system is part of the total postural management regime.
    • If special seating may stimulate a client to achieve progress in sitting towards the next level of sitting ability.
    • When the provision of special seating will improve the clients' ability to achieve activities of daily living i.e. mobility, feeding, school work etc.
  • Parents/carers must agree, after demonstration and advice, to the provision of special seating.
  • Parents/carers will be instructed in how to position the client correctly in the seating system.
  • The client will be placed on the waiting list for the appropriate clinic and will be given some indication of the timescale involved.
  • Wherever possible, the main carer or key worker should attend special seating appointments with the client.
  • One seating system only will be provided.
